Nimble Branch Line Motive Power - Tank locomotives should use little fuel and also be able to run in both directions without the need for a turntable on branch lines with low axle load limits. For these reasons maneuverable, general-purpose locomotives were indispensable in the past particularly for bringing cars on short routes to main lines and for switching work. In addition, their designs were supposed to be extremely simple to operate and not incur much in the way of servicing and repair costs. These locomotives were often painted in decorative provincial railroad color schemes, and a number of them have survived up to the present in part on privately owned and industrial railroads as well as due to the commitment of railroad enthusiasts. Such admirable old-timers can be found on the motive power roster of many railroad museums.
