History
The S/S Hjejlen is the world’s oldest still active, coal-fired paddle steamer. She was built in 1861 by Baumgarten & Burmeister (later Burmeister & Wain) in Copenhagen. On June 24, 1861, she made her maiden voyage from Silkeborg to Himmelbjerget (“Sky Mountain”) in Denmark – with King Frederick VII himself on board. The originally installed steam engine is still in operation today. The Hjejlen reaches a speed of 8 knots and still sails on the lakes around Silkeborg. Originally, she carried a tall mast, which was later replaced by a funnel. Further modifications followed, including replacing a sun awning with a fixed roof. The kit is based on these later plans and faithfully represents today’s version of the Hjejlen.
