The Bismarck, whose sister ship was the Tirpitz, was commissioned in August 1940. She entered service under the command of Captain Ernst Lindemann and was the largest and most powerful battleship at the time. She could reach a top speed of 30.1 knots (approx. 56 km/h). Her armament consisted of eight 380 mm twin guns, twelve 150 mm twin guns, 16 105 mm L/65 A/A, 16 37 mm A/A, and 12 20 mm A/A guns.
