Prototype: The Type 66 was developed by EMD in the 1990s on behalf of the British railway company English, Welsh & Scottish Railway (EWS) as the successor to the Type 59. It is one of the most widely built locomotives in Great Britain. However, this six-axle diesel locomotive of Canadian manufacture is also very successful in continental Europe. From 2005, a revised version was launched under the designation Type 77. The locomotives are primarily used in heavy freight service.
