Description
Through the history of Märklin catalog titles.
The painting that adorns this car shows two express trains running side by side, almost as if competing against one another. A green class E 18 loco is running on the left-hand track, the classification track, while a BBÖ class 214 express steam loco, the biggest steam loco class ever built in Austria, hauls an impressive express train on the opposite track on the right-hand side. Coupled directly behind the steam loco, the baggage car, which even has a cupola in the middle of the car, is also worthy of attention. The background of the painting shows a towering mountain range with snow-capped peaks. It is interesting to note that the BBÖ class 214 has never (yet) featured as a model in the Märklin range, even though, looking at the other large, bombastic steam and electric locos from various countries released by Märklin at the time, it certainly possesses all the attributes to be honored with a model! It is reasonable to assume that the painter Josef Danilowatz, who was born in Vienna in 1877, was motivated by his nationality to pay an artistic tribute to the largest steam locomotive series in his home country.
