High performance in shunting service – The Class V 90
The V 90 is a medium-heavy, diesel-hydraulic shunting and switching locomotive of the Deutsche Bundesbahn, developed for demanding tasks on the tracks. Originally derived from the V 100, MaK (Maschinenbau Kiel) created a completely new design: longer, more robust, and more powerful. The first 20 pre-production locomotives were delivered in 1964/65, followed by series production from 1966 onwards featuring the proven MTU 12V engine and a top speed of 80 km/h. Over the decades, the V 90 proved to be versatile: evolving from its original crimson livery to ocean blue-beige and today's traffic red design. Equipped with modern radio remote control, it was further developed into the Class 294 – an important step toward increasing efficiency in shunting operations. Today, the class forms the backbone of DB Cargo's single-wagon transport. The locomotives shunt freight trains throughout Germany, pick up wagons from industrial sidings, and ensure smooth operations in marshalling yards.
