Throughout World War II, the Messerschmitt Bf109 served as the main fighter of the German Luftwaffe, with over 30,000 aircraft produced. Among its variants, the G-6 was the most heavily manufactured type, debuting in February 1943. Powered by a DB605 engine with a takeoff output of 1,475 hp, its nose-mounted armament was upgraded from 7.92mm machine guns to 13mm guns. To cover the ammunition belt ejection chutes for these larger weapons, distinctive bulges known as "Beule" (bumps) were added to the sides of the cowling. Late-production G-6 models featured a streamlined engine cowling and a clear-view canopy (often called the Erla canopy) that reduced framing to significantly improve pilot visibility. Modification kits were also developed to equip the fighter with underwing 21cm rocket launchers, specifically aimed at intercepting heavy Allied bombers. Undergoing continuous refinements, the G-6 fought on the front lines until the very last day of the war.
