In the early 1990s, a need emerged for modern and powerful three-phase AC locomotives for freight service, leading DB to issue a tender for the development of such a vehicle in 1993. The Siemens/Krauss-Maffei consortium won the contract and created prototype 152 001-4 by 1995, as the second member of the well-known EuroSprinter family. Out of the subsequent order for 195 units, DB AG called up 170 machines. Upon entering service, all locomotives were assigned to the Nuremberg Marshalling Yard depot (Bw Nürnberg Rangierbahnhof). From here, the vehicles are operated in front of freight trains throughout Germany, with hinterland transport for the Port of Hamburg originating from the Maschen marshalling yard representing a key focus. In addition to the DB AG locomotives, Siemens also produced two machines under the designation ES64F for its in-house leasing company "Dispolok". These were later sold to the railway company ITL and are currently in service for Captrain in their striking neon green livery.

Technically, the model continues the proven line of PIKO Expert models. A powerful central motor serves as the drive, while two flywheels refine the running characteristics. Diagonally arranged traction tires on the two inner axles provide additional grip, enabling the haulage of impressive model freight trains. In digital operation with the PIKO SmartDecoder XP 5.1, the cab lighting, control desk illumination, and high beams can be switched digitally. Thanks to PIKO TrainSound®, the sound versions of the locomotive also feature prototypical vehicle sounds.
